Introduced in 1994, the RCAF Golden Hawks Award honours the famed precision air display team formed in 1959 to mark Canada's 50th anniversary of powered flight. Flying Canadair-built F-86 Sabres, the team quickly established a world standard for jet aerobatics.

The award was specifically designed and constructed by Canadair/Bombardier employees for presentation by the Air Force Association "in recognition of outstanding contributions... in any field of military aviation.

439 Combat Support Squadron, 3 Wing Bagotville... in recognition of its outstanding performance and display of initiative and bravery which, during extremely perilous conditions, saved in excess of fifty people from certain death during the initial hours of the Saguenay Valley flood disaster 19-20 July 1996. The sudden onset of the flood caught many residents and campers, scattered along 1300 kms of lakes, rivers and dams completely by
surprise, with escape routes destroyed and in peril of being swept away in the raging torrents of flood waters. 439 Squadron reacted immediately with three helicopters, patrolled the affected area in poor visibility, high winds and heavy rains. By 20 July, fifty stranded people in danger of being swept away were rescued from the house and car roofs. No loss of life occurred in the region due to flooding. 439 Squadron made a difference with its immediate response and subsequent acts of professionalism during an extraordinary crisis.
