Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

21 March 1944

 R.A.F. Station Hurn,  Bournemouth, England

F/O Jack Ross left this morning for Ayr to attend the funeral of F/O MacTavish. "Mac" is to be buried in Ayr Cemetery. A pilot of 440 Squadron went up to funeral of F/O Mitchell, who crashed in a Typhoon on the way down from Ayr. This afternoon at approximately 1600 hrs. we had another very regrettable accident.

F/L N.E. Pollock & F/O Hewson were dog- fighting when they were intercepted by 2 Thunderbolts in pansy formation. According to F/O Hewson, Pollock straightened out his aircraft, Hurricane LS 972, only to see a Thunderbolt taking a cut at him. The Thunderbolt apparently didn't break in time & cut about half of Norv's starboard wing off. This happened at about 1500 ft. Norv went into a spin, came out of it & then spun again. His aircraft exploded & burned about 2 miles east of the airport.

S/L Smith, our ex C.O. visited us today. He is just back off leave & apparently will be reporting to RCAF "K" Depot at Harrington. The C.O. got word to go to Turnhouse for Court of Inquiry re "Mac's" crash. He is supposed to be there at 09:30 tomorrow morning, so will be flying up. F/O's Smith & Kalen back off a very hectic leave in London.
