This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

08 February 1944

 R.A.F. Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland

This afternoon we put on a Wing Show with 438 Squadron. The Wince flew with 438, and although there were a few misjudgements the scheme was very successful. This was our first Wing formation, and the Wince was very pleased.

It was learned today that we will not be carrying rockets, but will be strictly a Fighter Bomber Squadron. F/O Monson, McTavish, Laycock and Rassenti went solo in the Typhoon. Much to our hearty approval, we were presented with a new radio by the Salvation Army. It was a grand gesture on their part and we really appreciate it. This evening an Airfield dance was held in the N.A.A.F.I (Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes) with all ranks attending. The main attraction was the 13 piece RCAF Dance Band from London. They form  part of the RCAF Overseas Band, which put on a concert previous to the dance. Free beer and buffet supper were served during the evening.
