This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

07 February 1944

 R.A.F. Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland

The weather doesn't look very promising, but F/L Pollock went up on a weather check and decided in favour of flying. F/O Laycock in Hurricane 568 ran into F/O Moen in Hurricane 577 while they were doing Section tactics. Moen's starboard elevator was half torn off and the rudder was one third shot. There was a foot knocked off each blade of Laycock's aircraft and they were splintered up to the hub. They both managed to get back to the aerodrome, and it really took smart flying to do it.

F/O's Smith, Stelter, Hogg and Burgess got away solo on the Typhoon. There are still 11 pilots to be checked out. F/O J. Kalen (J21856) departed this morning to attend a 14 day course at the Junior Commander's School, RAF Dallachy. The main purpose of this school is to help Officers to appreciate the responsibilities and duties of Flight Commanders and Squadron Commanders.
