This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

31 December 1944

 B-78 Holland

Clear, cold and frosty throughout the day with high thin scattered cloud that increased in density in the afternoon. The pilots proceeded to B.80 Vokel in the wee hours of the morning whence they are to carry out an operation following which they are to land back at our own base, weather permitting. A "V2" found its mark not far from the drome this morning around 0810 hours whilst the airmen were having breakfast the explosion of which made them take cover under the tables and a "V1" was heard going by at 1100 hours followed by an explosion not many minutes later.

Information has been received from Air Ministry by signal to the effect that J.28760 F/O J.A. Brown the pilot who baled out during an operation on the 6th of November, 1944 at DEVENTER, has been captured and is now a prisoner of war. That was certainly good news. F/O Sam Angelini returned from England after spending the best part of the month, waiting for the weather to clear up. Two operations were carried out today; one from Vokel and one from our own base.

Details of Sortie or Flight

The Squadron took off from Vokel this time where they had landed two days before. With F/O R.H. Laurence leading they set course for the COESFELD area to carrying out an armed recce. They patrolled the area but no movement what so ever was seen. Just west of DORSTEN, Germany, a stationary train with a few box cars and five flat cars carrying 88 mm guns, was attacked by Blue flight; they damaged the one gun and the locomotive, and some of the cars. Although light and heavy flak was encountered, the aircraft returned safely to base.
