This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

26 October 1944

 B-78 Holland

Cloud and heavy ground haze again. This is getting just a little too much!! Most of the pilots want a little flying and the groundcrew are also browned off due to the lack of operations, and only being engaged on constantly running aircraft. The news received today was both good and bad.

First, we were advised by intelligence that F/O R.V. Smith, the pilot whose aircraft exploded on the 22 of this month was in hospital at Eindhoven. Second, a signal was received from B.P.S.O. that J.21202 F/O R.A. Porritt who was missing since 19th August, 1944 in the Vimeutiers area, France, was buried by French civilians. His identity discs were found, so that he is now reclassified, missing, believed killed.

No operations were carried out today.
