Clear weather all day except for a little scattered cloud that dispersed in the evening, accompanied by a stiff and cool breeze. J.22803 F/L W.L. Saunders, a pilot, arrived today from 83 GSU for operational duties. Also! a laundry was found in Vieldhoven. We certainly needed some washing done after ganging on since leaving Brussels. The Squadron piled up operations today.

Dive Bombing 07:40 08:25
Details of Sortie or Flight

Early this morning S/L K.J. Fiset, DFC, led a formation of eight of our aircraft into the air to carry out a dive-bombing attack against a railroad bridge at Rhenen (E.5275). The attack was made off a steep turn from 8,000 feet to the north of the target. The fifty degree dive resulted in some very accurate bombing. All bombs threw up clouds of dust and smoke around the bridge but when it cleared away, the bridge itself was still standing, damaged, but intact. For this show the Squadron had employed 1000 lb. bombs with .025 tail fuses. A small amount of inaccurate light flak was seen but no damage resulted from it. All aircraft pancaked safely.

The railway bridge was the same target as in the, but nine aircraft took-off this time. 1,000 lb. bombs were fitted with instantaneous nose fuses. S/L Fiset, DFC, led the Squadron down in an attack which was identical to the preceding one. As before, great clouds of debris were thrown into the air around the bridge but this time when it cleared, the bridge was "kaput". The entire southern span had been knocked out. An electric train and two passenger trains were seen but not attacked, just south of the bridge as flak was quite evident from this area. Slit trenches and possible troop positions on both sides of the river east of the target, were straffed. No results were observed. One aircraft was slightly damaged by flak - flown by F/O Laycock. All aircraft pancaked safely at base.

Details of Sortie or Flight

F/L Monson led a flight of four aircraft, each carrying 1,000 lb. bombs with .025 tail fuses, in a dive-bombing attack against the railway marshalling yards at Goch. The bombs were all in the target area and caused considerable damage to a train of fifty goods trucks in the yards. No movement was seen and all aircraft returned safely to base.

Dive-Bombing 14:10 15:00

Details of Sortie or Flight

These four aircraft carried 500 lb. bombs (11 second delay) into the air and F/O hogg led them in an attack against the rail line at Issum (A.0928). F/O Hogg had two hang-ups which he managed to release later. The other six bombs were in the target area but the line was not cut. A small amount of light flak was fired from the vicinity of the target and the aircraft flown by P/O McBride was hit in the oil radiator. The four aircraft turned towards base but P/O McBride found it necessary to make an emergency landing at E.6916 (15 miles east of base). P/O  McBride was whisked up by an American patrol and a number of Huns came out of the woods nearby to destroy his aircraft. P/O McBride was returned to us unharmed later that day with his fingers still crossed.

F/O Johns led the four aircraft back again to the rail line at Issum (A.0928). This time the two rails were cut in a siding with three direct hits. The Squadron encountered a great amount of light flak on the trip. F/O Swingler got one flamer (truck) and two damaged on the way home. Large fire seen at A.1133 and defensive positions seen along the river Meuse. All aircraft returned to base.
