Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

22 August 1944

 R.C.A.F. Lantheuil, France

Low cloud in the morning, improving a little before lunch, even so one operation was carried out in the afternoon. The movie at night in the Officer's Mess "Song of Russia" dispelled some of the gloom cast by the weather.

Details of Sortie or Flight

Eight aircraft of our Squadron led by F/L Burton, carried out an armed recce of the area immediate to Bernay. The recce was carried out from 4000 to 6000 except in the cases of attacks on ground targets. These attacks were carried right down to ground level with good results. Almost immediately F/O Laurence spotted two MET at map reference Q8583. In quick succession he and F/O Hewson sent them both up in flames. Widely scattered MET was found in the area and all pilots shared equally in the destruction. F/O Hewson experienced fuel tank trouble and while returning to base with him, F/O  Laurence ran into some light flak at Lisieux. The aircraft was hit, but no great damage done. All aircraft returned safely to base having accounted for 2 flamers , and 10 damaged MET.

Webmaster's Notes:

(1)  Flying Typhoon P,  F/O GW Hewson notes in his log book that he "Got two beautiful petrol trucks and one staff car"  with light flak reported.
