for

20 July 1944

 R.C.A.F. Lantheuil

The weather was duff most of the day accompanied by rain in the evening. There was one operation in the afternoon on which G.P. bombs were used as an experiment due to the fact that this type of bomb was utilized on the 17th July and not one exploded. Today, four aircraft carried two G.P.'s each and only three bombs went off. A Court of Inquiry has been convened to investigate the failure of which S/L Grant O.C. of 428 Squadron is the President.

Details of Sortie or Flight

This sortie was conducted in the nature of an experiment to attempt to ascertain the possible causes of the failure of the mission on the 17th July during which none of the 14 x 500 lb G.P. bombs dropped exploded. Four aircraft were loaded up with 500 lb. G.P. (General Purpose) bombs with the same fusing as on the previously mentioned show. S/L Norsworthy went along to watch. A small bridge, just of South of Gabourg was chosen as the target. In this case, only three of the eight bombs exploded. No claims were made as regards bomb damage. No flak and enemy aircraft were sighted.
