This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

30 June 1944

 R.C.A.F. Lantheuil

Heavy cloud all day with some light rain in the afternoon. There was a terrific barrage in the direction of Caen, very early in the morning as some enemy aircraft flew in our territory, some were destroyed. Again guns let loose about 11:00 hrs. No Operations were carried out to weather conditions and soft runways. In the afternoon our office truck was set up for the bumph boys who are straining at the least  to catch up with outstanding correspondence and especially returns. This truck was previously used for carrying equipment, bombs and petrol. At night the fellows tossed in their sleep with the extremely consistent heavy exchange of gun fire. Around midnight there were several exceptionally heavy bursts accompanied by whistling of the shells in harmony that promptly initiated our fellows to the shelters. As the "Doc" would say "there will be less need for administering my laxations".

Webmaster's Notes:

(1) The 541 Form for the month of June 1944 is extremely illegible, and difficult to read, and may entail a trip to Ottawa to get a better copy out of the Directorate of History. Hopefully theirs will more legible.

In the meantime, illegible text is indicated by a series of  question " ? " marks.
