This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

27 June 1944

 R.C.A.F. Lantheuil

Heavy and low overcast intermittently and at other times heavy scattered cloud. G/C Davoud and 17 pilots took off from Hurn at 09:10 hrs. after having bid it silent farewell, for the purpose of landing at our new airfield in France. But in view of the unserviceability of our runways the pilots landed at 121 Airfield. 8 of our pilots, the Adjutant and Medical  Officer, all our groundcrew proceeded with the Airlift Party in D.C. 3's (Dakota) aircraft at 12:00 hrs. and landed at 13:55 hrs. at 124 Airfield.

It was a unique trip for the groundcrews and the interest was augmented by the colossal number of vessels in the Channel. At the beachhead a terrific number of ships of all sizes were viewed. On landing we were transported by trucks to 149 Airfield through the mud in spite of heavy showers.

We are now located at Lantheuil near St. Gariel, map reference T.903782. F/O Babe Swingler had some tough luck when he force landed at 121 due to engine failure, his machine caught fire and burned all (his) personal & service clothing and equipment which he carried.

Webmaster's Notes:

(1) Regardless of the missed itinerary mentioned above, at least one aircraft made it to its intended destination. According to the Logbook of F/O GW Hewson, he actually flew directly to B5 (Lantheuil) from Hurn, England and thus made his first landing in France. The flight took 45 minutes.

(2)  The 541 Form for the month of June 1944 is extremely illegible, and difficult to read, and may entail a trip to Ottawa to get a better copy out of the Directorate of History. Hopefully theirs will more legible.

In the meantime, illegible text is indicated by a series of  question " ? " marks.
