 R.A.F. Hurn

Good weather all day. The Hurn Servicing Wing took over maintenance today to enable our personnel to pack their equipment, tents and kits preparatory to movement onto the Continent in the near future. The Officers moved to Hurn for sleeping accommodation and messing, but are still conducting operations from our Airfield. Only one operation was carried out and this was late in the afternoon.

Details of Sortie or Flight

W/C Judd flying in our Squadron led the Wing of two squadrons, i.e.  439 and 440, in a dive bombing attack on a M.T. concentration found at Varsville. 439 attacked the target first and made every bomb count. Once again the bombing was amazingly accurate. As the smoke of the enemy M.T. began to scurry out of the rubble like ants out of an anthill. No flak was observed. In the return journey, F/O ????? (1) of 440 was forced to bale out but unfortunately he was killed. All other aircraft returned safely.

Webmaster's Note:

(1) Unable to decipher 440's casualty mentioned above.

 (2) The 541 Form for the month of June 1944 is extremely illegible, and difficult to read, and may entail a trip to Ottawa to get a better copy out of the Directorate of History. Hopefully theirs will more legible. In the meantime, illegible text is indicated by a series of  question " ? " marks.
