This Day In History

Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

17 May 1944

 R.A.F. Hutton Cranswick

Low scattered cloudy and windy all day. Arrangements being made by the bumph boys in the breezy seat of industry (static truck) to move 439 Squadron back to 143 Airfield. The Air Party is to proceed on 19-5-44 and the Main part by road on the morning of 20-5-44. A clean-up is also being made of old files for subsequent disposal by a board of officers. The pilots concentrated on air to ground firing all day from 0940 hrs. until 1730 hrs.

The 439 gang got mobile in the evening as the Squadron was beating out rhythm to the tune of Hutton Cranswick's band. To break the monotony, the fellows took time out to sip a few noggins of ale and a bit of fire water. The Squadron also played host to the Station Commander, Wing Commander W.L. White, the Senior Administrative officer, Adjutant, RAF Officers, S/L Pegge, O.C. of 16 APC as well as his training staff. It was good fun while the party lasted.
