Summary of Events for  No. 439 (CAN) Squadron 

as recorded in the  439 Squadron Operations Record Book

for

25 April 1944

 R.A.F. Hurn

Eight aircraft with 2005 lb. bomb lead and a Fighter cover of 4 aircraft took off at 0955 hrs. to bomb a bridge near Agon. On reaching the target, it was found covered by 9/10ths cloud, from approximately 3500 ft. to 5000 ft. No direct hits were made on the target. No. 440 squadron went after the same target, but failed to destroy the bridge. At 1730 hrs. the Wince lead the three squadrons (24 planes) to the same target & direct hits were scored. C20089 F/O M. Harrison arrived in the evening on posting from RCAF Skip-on-Swale to assume duties of Squadron Adjutatnt.

Details of Sortie or Flight

Dive-bombing of bridge near Agon. 2 x 1000 lb. bombs were used on each aircraft. All our aircraft were are not fitted with 1,000 lbs racks, so we borrowed from other two squadrons. Target covered by 9/10ths cloud from 3,500' to 5,000'. No direct hits were made on target. This is the first time that 1,000 lb. bombs have been used.(1) Fighter cover for the dive-bombers .

Details of Sortie or Flight

Dive bombing of same bridge near Agon, Three Squadrons with 500 lb bombs made their attack, and six hits were observed on bridge. There were quite a few near misses. Dive made from 6,000' to 3,000'.
